Agartala, September 13, 2023: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Dharmanagar police seized 50 grams of heroin and arrested two smugglers on Wednesday morning. The arrested are Sumantani Nath (41) and Raju Das (55), both residents of Dharmanagar.
According to Inspector Momtaj Hasina, who led the operation, the police raided Sumantani Nath’s house in Tongibari Ward No. 3 under Dharmanagar Police Station around 10 am on Wednesday. During the raid, the police found 50 grams of heroin hidden in a soap case inside the house. The police also nabbed Raju Das, who had brought the heroin from Assam to sell it in Tripura.
The police sources said that Raju Das was a notorious drug peddler who used to smuggle heroin from the neighbouring state of Assam to Tripura in different areas. He had been supplying heroin to Sumantani Nath, who was also involved in the drug trade. The police acted on a tip-off and arrested them before they could distribute the heroin further.
The police registered a case against the two smugglers under Section 22/25/29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and took them to the police station for interrogation. They will be produced before the court soon. The police said that this was a success of their anti-drug campaign and they will continue to take strict action against drug dealers and users.
The local people welcomed the police action and said that drug dealing and drug use had been going on in Tongi house for a long time. They said that they hoped that the police would eradicate the drug menace from their area and make it safe and peaceful.
