Agartala, 29th August 2026: Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha on Saturday unveiled a marble statue of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, paying tribute to one of India’s greatest sporting icons and his contribution to the country’s hockey legacy.

The statue was unveiled at a special programme marking the achievements of the Indian hockey team in the Olympic Games of 1928, 1932 and 1936. Speaking at the event, Dr. Saha described the occasion as both special and historic and recalled Major Dhyan Chand’s remarkable contribution to Indian sports.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the rapid expansion of sports infrastructure in Tripura. He said the state has witnessed the construction of synthetic hockey and football grounds, an athletics track and a swimming pool. According to him, such facilities are being developed not only in Agartala but across different parts of the state.

Recalling his own association with athletics, Dr. Saha said that earlier athletes used conventional 400-metre tracks for competitions, while the availability of synthetic tracks now marks a significant improvement in sporting facilities.

He further said the government has introduced three schemes named after the Chief Minister to extend financial support to sportspersons.

Dr. Saha urged the younger generation to make sports an integral part of their lives. He stressed that regular practice is essential for achieving excellence and improving concentration.

Encouraging young athletes, he said that greater participation and dedication in sports would enable them to establish themselves and bring pride and glory to Tripura as well as the nation.
