Drivers demand justice and insurance in protest at Agartala city

Agartala, December 31: A group of drivers staged a protest in front of the Agartala Press Club on Sunday, demanding the formation of national and state commissions for drivers, as well as the launch of the All India Drivers Aayog Diwas from September 1.

The protest was organized by the Khowai District Committee of the All Drivers Welfare Association, which represents 22 crore drivers in the country. The association also demanded that commercial drivers should be given full renewal every five years, and that drivers working on outsourcing contracts should be regularized under equal pay in various corporations and institutions.

Shahjahan Mia, the district president of the association, told a press conference that the drivers also wanted an insurance of 20 lakhs for each motorist. He said that the drivers were facing various problems and challenges in their profession, and that they needed the support and recognition of the government and the society.
