Agartala, 5th October 2025 :  In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in Northeast India, Assam Police seized 21,600 bottles of narcotic cough syrup from a truck at the Churaibari checkpost on Sunday morning. The intercepted vehicle, a 12-wheeler bearing registration number WB23D7176, was en route from Kolkata to Agartala when it was stopped for routine inspection by gate-in-charge Pranab Mili.

The contraband was discovered concealed inside multiple colored drums loaded onto the truck. The driver, identified as Syed Abdul, son of Amirul Islam from Malda, West Bengal, was taken into custody. According to his statement, the drums were loaded in Kolkata. Authorities estimate the black market value of the seized cough syrup to exceed ₹2 crore.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation is underway.

However, the incident has sparked controversy. A reliable source within Assam Police revealed that the truck was actually detained on Friday night, raising questions about the delay in conducting the search and seizure, which was only officially documented on Sunday morning. Allegations have surfaced that a significant portion of the cough syrup may have mysteriously disappeared during this time.

Suspicion deepened after two AS-numbered WagonR vehicles were reportedly seen loitering near the Assam-Tripura border on Friday night. Sources claim that these vehicles may have been involved in offloading a large quantity of the contraband before the official seizure was recorded.

The incident has triggered internal unrest within Assam Police, with concerns mounting over possible collusion. Local communities and activists are demanding a transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure strict action against those responsible.

As drug trafficking continues to plague the region, this case underscores the urgent need for accountability and vigilance among enforcement agencies.
