Agartala, February 17: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Sonamura police arrested a young man with 573 Yaba tablets from his car on Saturday. The accused, identified as Raju Nama, is a repeat offender who has been involved in drug dealing for a long time.
According to the police, they received a tip-off that some vehicles were carrying drugs from the border areas to the city. Acting on the information, a team of police officers led by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonamura police station set up a checkpoint near the Sonamura playground and started checking the vehicles passing by.
Around 10 am, they stopped a car with the registration number TR01-BX-0411 and asked the driver to show his documents. The driver, who turned out to be Raju Nama, tried to evade the police and acted suspiciously. The police then searched his car and found a bag containing 573 Yaba tablets hidden under the seat.
The police arrested Raju Nama on the spot and seized his car and the drugs. He was taken to the Sonamura police station for interrogation. The police said that he confessed to his involvement in drug smuggling and revealed the names of some of his associates. The police have registered a case against him under the NDPS Act and are conducting further investigation to nab the other culprits.
The OC of Sonamura police station said that this was a significant achievement for the police in their fight against drug menace. He said that the police are committed to eradicate drug trafficking from the area and will continue to take strict action against the offenders. He also appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and report any suspicious activities related to drugs.
