Agartala, 4th October 2024: A shocking incident highlights the gap between proclaimed good governance and the harsh reality as three drunken youths from the alleged notorious ‘Bike Bahini’ assaulted traffic police officers in the heart of the capital city on Friday afternoon. The incident took place in the Netaji Chowmuhani area leaving bystanders and law-abiding citizens in disbelief.
According to eyewitnesses, the three youths visibly intoxicated blatantly violated the Traffic Vehicle Act. When the traffic police attempted to stop them, the youths tried to flee prompting the officers to pull them over. What followed was a scene of utter chaos and disrespect.
One of the onlookers, Rajesh Sharma recounted, “The youths were completely out of control. They started mocking the police officers questioning why they were being stopped. It was as if they had no fear of the law.”
The situation escalated quickly as two of the youths began to verbally and physically abuse the traffic officers. “Are these traffic workers or thieves?” one of the hooligans taunted, making derogatory remarks about the officers’ physical appearance. The youths used obscene language and gestures, creating a scene that many described as polluting the moral fabric of society.
A local shopkeeper Anjali Das expressed her concern, “Their behavior was not just disrespectful; it was dangerous. They were inciting communal tensions with their words. It was clear they felt untouchable, claiming to be members of the ‘Bike Bahini’.”
The most alarming aspect of the incident was the apparent impunity with which the youths acted. Despite the proximity of the West Agartala police station, no immediate action was taken against them. “If this is the kind of education and behavior promoted by certain political parties and their affiliated groups, where is our society headed?” questioned Suresh Banerjee, a retired school teacher who witnessed the incident.
The three youths, whose homes are reportedly in Bardowali, Kabiraj Tilla and Madhyapara areas left a trail of fear and frustration among the residents. “People with good sense left the scene with their heads down. Such a display of lawlessness is unprecedented,” said Das.
The incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the influence of political affiliations on public behavior. As the community grapples with the shock, there is a growing call for accountability and stricter enforcement of the law to prevent such incidents in the future.
