Illegal timber worth Rs 10 lakh seized in North Tripura operation

Agartala, 4th October 2024:  North Tripura district forest department recovered illegal sawn timber worth Rs 10 lakh from the Saraspur area of Kadamtala. Acting on secret information, Forest department staff along with Kadamtala police raided the house of Tapan Sharma alias Tapur on Friday afternoon.

During the raid, authorities seized two and a half hundred feet of illegally stockpiled sawn timber of various tree species. However, the alleged wood mafia, Tapan Sharma, managed to evade arrest.

District Forest Officer Suman Malla confirmed that the operation was based on a tip-off. He stated, “Different sizes of wood were recovered during this operation, with a market value of Rs 10 lakh. A case has been filed against the accused, and an investigation will be conducted.”

The recovered timber was reportedly brought and stored illegally from Juri Reserve Forest and Kanchanpur by the accused timber mafia.
