Dumboor Hydropower plant to be restored with Rs 100 crore investment: Ratan Lal Nath

Date:

Agartala, 9th  October 2026 :  Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath today said that a target has been set to generate 11 megawatts of power by restoring the Dumboor hydropower plant. For this, Rs 100 crore will be spent, and work is scheduled to begin in December this year.

The Power Minister informed this while addressing a one-day Community Awareness Programme on Dam Safety at the Gumti Hydro Electric Project, Tirthamukh.

The Minister said that a law was enacted in India in 2021, noting that there are more than 7,000 dams in the country.

“But nobody had thought about formulating such a law earlier. Although there is nothing to worry about, a law was framed as a preventive measure, keeping the future in mind. The National Dam Safety Authority is present here, and this is a one-day workshop under its leadership. This dam was constructed 56 years ago, and the waters of the Raima and Saima rivers meet here. Every river has its source. The source of the Gomati River is here at Dumboor. This is the confluence of the Raima and Saima rivers. There were three units here and capable of generating 15 MW of power. However, generation gradually declined, and after our government came to power, we managed to generate 2 to 3 MW,” said the Minister.

The Minister informed that the plant was completely damaged by floods in 2024. A survey was subsequently carried out with the assistance of NIT, IIT Guwahati, BHEL and NHPC. An underwater robot was also brought from Kerala to examine the present condition of the Dumboor Dam.

“We have already undertaken a plan to generate 10 to 11 MW of power, for which Rs 100 crore will be spent. The work will begin this December,” he said.

The Minister further informed that, during the last Cabinet meeting, it was decided to install BSNL network facilities and mobile towers in areas where network connectivity is unavailable. The work will begin soon.

“Gomati is the first power generation project in Tripura and a place of historical importance. There are 48 lakes in Dumboor. Apart from power generation, the area has also become a backbone of fish cultivation, and thousands of people depend on it for their livelihoods. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the law was enacted, and regular mandatory pre- and post-monsoon reviews of dams are conducted in coordination with all officials. Ensuring the safety of people living downstream is our highest priority,” he added.

MLAs, MDCs, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Second-in-Command of the 124 Battalion CRPF, Sushil Kumar, Inspector of the NDRF, officials of TPGL and officials of the National Dam Safety Authority were present at the event.
