Elderly man murdered in Melaghar robbery; SP warns of Severe punishment for accused

Agartala, 13th August 2025:  An elderly man was brutally murdered and his wife severely injured during a robbery in Melaghar’s Kalamkhet area under Sonamura police station. The crime took place on the night of August 5 in Ward No. 4 of Granthali Gram Panchayat.

Police reported that a gang of 8 to 10 armed robbers broke into the home of 80-year-old Shanti Ranjan Das and fatally attacked him. His wife Namita Das was also assaulted and left for dead. The assailants fled the scene believing both victims had succumbed to their injuries. However, Namita regained consciousness the following morning and alerted a neighbor, triggering panic and outrage in the area.

In response to the incident, Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma addressed a peace meeting stating that the accused could face the death penalty given the gravity of the crime. He urged residents to maintain communal harmony and assist police personnel in ensuring justice.

Local authorities have launched an intensive investigation.
