Agartala, 7th September 2026 : Tension prevailed in the Naljola area of Bishramganj following allegations that a 70-year-old woman, identified as Lakshmi Sarkar, was assaulted by a youth named Shahid Mia.
According to local sources, Lakshmi Sarkar allegedly sustained injuries after being assaulted, and the conch bangles she was wearing were also broken during the incident. The alleged accused, Shahid Mia, is reportedly a resident of the same area.
The incident drew strong reactions from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), whose members and supporters staged a road blockade in front of Bishramganj Police Station on the national highway, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and a fair investigation into the incident.
The protesters condemned the alleged assault on the elderly woman and demanded that the accused be arrested without delay and dealt with according to law.
The blockade disrupted vehicular movement on the national highway for some time. Police reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. Following assurances from the police that the accused would be arrested at the earliest, the protesters withdrew the blockade.
Vehicular movement on the highway subsequently returned to normal.
