Agartala, 19th June 2026: Agartala is set to witness a major transformation in rail connectivity as the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) prepares to introduce an electric MEMU train service between Agartala and Karimganj. According to NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava, the service will be launched soon, marking a significant step toward modern, high-capacity passenger transport in the region.
Srivastava also announced that electrification work on the key railway corridor stretching from Sabroom to Guwahati has been successfully completed. He highlighted that MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains are designed for efficiency, comfort, and higher passenger capacity, and this upcoming route would be the first of its kind under NFR.
Speaking at a press conference held at Agartala Railway Station, he shared details of ongoing redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. A new three-storey station building is currently under construction, with Phase 1 estimated at ₹48 crore and targeted for completion by March 2027. Once completed, the station will feature upgraded passenger amenities, expanded waiting areas, and improved facilities, along with additional platforms to handle increased traffic.
He further noted that redevelopment work at Udaipur Railway Station in Gomati district and Kumarghat Railway Station in Unakoti district is progressing at a fast pace and is expected to be completed by September this year.
During his visit, the General Manager inspected various ongoing projects at Agartala Railway Station and inaugurated newly installed lifts on Platforms 1 and 2 to enhance accessibility for elderly and differently-abled passengers. He also reviewed passenger services including waiting room toilets, ticket counters, Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), scanning systems, and retiring rooms.
Srivastava added that goods train operations have already begun at Nischintapur Railway Station. He also informed that collaborative work involving Indian Railways, IOCL, and the State Public Works Department at Sekerkot Railway Station is nearing completion and is expected to be finished by next August.
He further mentioned a minor power supply issue on the New Haflong railway line but confirmed that electrification across the Sabroom–Guwahati stretch has been completed. Plans are also being considered for a future double-line expansion between Badarpur and Agartala to further strengthen rail connectivity in the region.
