Agartala, 14th October 2026 : Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath today said the state government is giving top priority to strengthening electricity infrastructure, with a special focus on improving power supply in remote and border areas of Tripura.
Minister said this while inaugurating two 132 kv sub-stations in Sabroom and Santhchand in South District.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives, Power Minister said these substations are being developed to improve electricity services, with efforts being made to ensure that people receive the benefits before Durga Puja.
Speaking about the Satchand substation, the minister said its capacity is being upgraded from 66 KV to 132 KV at an estimated cost of Rs 47.83 crore.
He said that the upgraded facility will strengthen power distribution and transmission in Satchand and adjoining areas. A control room will also be established on the top floor of the facility, while a 132 KV transmission line is being developed at Bagafa to improve connectivity.
He said around 16,150 families in the Satchand area will benefit from the initiative. The project will cover Satchand, Manubazar, Shakbari, Magurchhara, Kalachhara, Duratholi, Sindukpathar, Rajib Nagar and Srinagar, among other areas.
Minister also highlighted the expansion of power infrastructure in Sabroom, where a project worth Rs 66.19 crore is being undertaken. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 21,398 families across Sabroom, Musthapur, Manughat, Harina, Bangul, the Integrated Check Post, Ludua and Rupachhari.
Minister also expressed concern over the low rate of electricity bill payments in the Sabroom and Santchand.
Citing departmental figures, he said that out of 17,085 electricity consumers in Sabroom, only 5,886 pay their bills, while 11,199 do not. Similarly, in Satchand, only 4,103 out of 14,168 consumers pay their electricity bills, leaving more than 10,000 consumers with unpaid bills.
He said the government continues to invest heavily in electricity infrastructure despite the low collection of revenue, stressing that reliable power supply is essential for development and the functioning of all sectors.
Power Minister said the number of 132 KV substations in Tripura has increased from 12 before the present government came to power to 21 at present. Similarly, the number of 33 KV substations has risen from 44 to 75, with work underway on additional facilities.
The minister further said that the Power Department has electrified 272 kilometres of railway lines in the state. To improve the reliability of electricity supply during storms and heavy rainfall, the department has expanded underground cabling from 95 kilometres to 411 kilometres.
He added that the installation of covered conductors, which help protect power lines during adverse weather conditions, has also been taken up on a large scale. The department has installed 14,820 circuit kilometres of covered conductors
