Agartala, 11th April 2025:   The Assam-Agartala National Highway, a vital transportation route was brought to a sudden halt when farming families from the Maharanipur area launched a protest today voicing their longstanding grievances. The incident, which initially caused significant disruption, was swiftly resolved through active intervention by both administrative officials and public representatives.

According to reports, several farming families from the Maharanipur area, under Teliamura police station jurisdiction, have been cultivating government khas land along the riverbanks in the Brahmachhara region for over 25 years. Tensions erupted when certain locals allegedly claimed ownership of the land and demanded Rs 5,000 from each farmer, pressuring them to vacate the plots. Outraged by these demands and seeking administrative support, the farmers resorted to blocking the national highway.

The protest quickly garnered attention, leading to prompt administrative action. Deputy Collector and Magistrate (DCM) Debasish Chakma arrived at the scene, initiating dialogue with the protesters in an attempt to defuse the tension. Shortly thereafter, Janjati Kalyan minister Bikash Debbarma reached the site to address the grievances directly.

In a statement to the protesting farmers, Minister Debbarma assured, “Your concerns have been heard with utmost seriousness. We will take all necessary steps at both the administrative and departmental levels to address and resolve these issues effectively.” His empathetic approach and commitment to action successfully convinced the farmers to end their blockade peacefully.

As the protest subsided, normalcy was restored on the Assam-Agartala National Highway, with traffic resuming its regular flow. The incident, which coincided with the Chief Minister’s visit to Teliamura on the same day, has sparked discussions within administrative and political circles due to its timing and the underlying tensions it exposed.
