Agartala, 20th February 2025:    A female police constable identified as Suniti Sarkar working at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station was found dead by hanging on Thursday morning at her residence.

According to family sources, Sarkar had taken a loan from the ONGC bank to build a two-storey house in the Netaji Nagar area of Amtali Police Station but was unable to repay the loan on time. This led the bank to exert increasing pressure on her, allegedly threatening arrest.

Speaking to reporters, a family member stated, “Suniti informed us about the bank’s threats, and we tried to console her.”

On Wednesday, while on duty at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station, Sarkar reportedly received news that the police would arrest her if she went home. Fearing the arrest, she returned to her home and committed suicide in the absence of her family.

Her husband Debdulal Sarkar upon finding her body alerted the neighbors. The incident was reported to Amtali police station. Sub-Inspector Hiren Debbarma, accompanied by the Deputy Collector Magistrate, arrived at the scene. Sarkar’s body was sent to Tripura Medical College & Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital’s morgue at Hapania for autopsy.

Sub-Inspector Debbarma confirmed, “We have started an investigation into this unnatural death.”

The incident, involving a 40-year-old constable, has left the local community in shock, casting a shadow over the entire area.
