Agartala, 18th February 2026: A devastating fire has reduced the home of daily wage worker Gopal Majumdar of Sukanta Nagar Panchayat to rubble, leaving him and his family of five, including three young children without shelter.
According to local residents, the blaze destroyed the family’s only dwelling, forcing them onto the streets. Although the Belonia fire brigade reached the area promptly, broken roads prevented them from accessing the house directly. The lack of modern firefighting equipment further hampered efforts, with firefighters reportedly attempting to control the flames using only sticks.
Residents have blamed poor infrastructure and departmental mismanagement for the tragedy, questioning the role of the fire service in protecting citizens’ property. Concerns have also been raised about the absence of modern tools and preparedness in the fire department, which often returns from emergencies unsuccessful despite urgent calls.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, with speculation ranging from sabotage to an electrical short circuit. Fortunately, no one was inside the house when the fire broke out.
In the aftermath, uncertainty looms over where Gopal Majumdar and his wife will take shelter with their three children. This morning, Belonia MLA Dipankar Sen visited the site with a delegation, speaking with the affected family and assuring them of support. Later, Mandal President and Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Putul Pal Biswas also met the family, promising to stand by them during this crisis and to coordinate with government departments for necessary assistance.
