Agartala, 20th February 2026 Panic gripped the area near the entrance of the Shaivite pilgrimage site Unakoti after a sudden fire broke out beside temporary shops this afternoon. Within moments, the flames spread into the nearby forest, alarming locals and visitors.
A fire engine from the Fire Department rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could cause major damage. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated from a burning cigarette or a cooking stove in one of the makeshift stalls.
Local residents expressed concern over the incident. A shopkeeper, who did not wish to be named, said, “I suddenly noticed smoke rising. Within minutes, the fire grew large. If the fire brigade hadn’t arrived quickly, the situation could have been disastrous.”
Another eyewitness pointed out the risks of open flames near the forested area, saying, “Tourists visit this place every day. Setting up temporary stalls so close to the jungle and using fire openly is dangerous. The administration must tighten safety measures.”
Tourists present at the site were also caught in the panic, though officials confirmed that swift action helped avert serious damage. Locals have urged authorities to strengthen fire safety and security protocols at the popular pilgrimage and tourist destination.
