Agartala, 15th June 2026: In a significant development in the case related to the alleged abetment of suicide of BJP leader Rahul Kishore Roy, the Tripura High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to five accused individuals.
Rahul Kishore Roy, a prominent Yuva BJP leader from Dharmanagar, had died by suicide at his residence on April 4. The incident had triggered widespread concern, with allegations emerging that he was subjected to mental harassment by certain fellow youth leaders within the party, which allegedly drove him to take the extreme step. The incident occurred shortly after BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty secured a landslide victory in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election.
Following the incident, a case was registered by the police against seven individuals under charges of abetment of suicide, based on a complaint filed by Roy’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharjee. During the course of the investigation, one accused was arrested, while the remaining individuals reportedly went into hiding to evade arrest.
Five of the accused—Manoj Purkayastha, Prabal Kanti Dey, Hirak Jyoti Nath, Saroj Deb, and Abhijit Das—had initially moved the District and Sessions Court in Dharmanagar seeking anticipatory bail, but their petitions were rejected.
Subsequently, they approached the Tripura High Court. The matter was heard by Justice Biswajit Palit on June 11, following which the court granted anticipatory bail to the five accused on Monday.
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
