Flood fury without rain: Residents block Belonia-Barpathari road in protest

Agartala, 21st July 2025:  Residents of flood-hit areas in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision staged a blockade on the Belonia-Barpathari road demanding urgent administrative intervention after repeated inundations despite the absence of rainfall.

Large swathes of Sukantanagar, IC Nagar and Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar were submerged after riverbanks near the disputed India-Bangladesh border embankment collapsed for the third time in a month. Locals allege that the flooding was triggered by river overflow and embankment breaches, not by rain, raising concerns over structural integrity and maintenance lapses.

With no relief in sight, agitated residents took to the streets, blocking a key arterial route to draw attention to their plight. The protest prompted swift action from the administration, with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Bilonia, Additional SDM, District Commissioner, and Panchayat Samiti Chairperson arriving at the scene. Officials assured the crowd that remedial measures would be taken promptly.

Following the assurance, the blockade was lifted peacefully. Local representatives are expected to submit a formal charter of demands to the District Magistrate tomorrow, seeking long-term flood mitigation and infrastructure repair.
