Agartala, 5th September 2026 : Former Chief Minister and CPI(M) Politburo member Manik Sarkar has strongly criticised the BJP-led government in Tripura, alleging that it has failed to adequately address the problems and interests of workers in the state.
Sarkar was addressing the 7th state conference of the Tripura Brick Kiln Workers’ Union held at Bhanu Ghosh Smriti Bhavan in Melarmath, Agartala. Union leader Shankar Prasad Dutta, along with activists and representatives from different parts of the state, attended the conference.
Sarkar alleged that since coming to power, the BJP government had failed to provide substantial benefits and facilities to workers. Instead of addressing their longstanding problems, he claimed, the government had largely confined itself to speeches and assurances.
He said the previous Left Front government had undertaken several measures to strengthen workers’ social security, protect labour rights, ensure fair wages and facilitate access to government welfare schemes.
According to Sarkar, the condition of workers has worsened under the present government. He also alleged that restrictions were being placed on workers’ organisations, making it increasingly difficult for workers to organise and raise their demands collectively.
The conference stressed the need to ensure workers’ legitimate rights, social security and welfare benefits while protecting the democratic functioning of workers’ organisations. Union leaders called for a broader movement to press for workers’ demands in the coming days.
