Agartala, 17th October 2026 : An attempt to block a national highway near Chandra Sadhupara in Baramura was foiled by Tripura Police early Saturday morning, with a group of former insurgents taken into custody following their alleged refusal to clear the road. Two police constables were injured during the operation.
Speaking about the incident, police officer Sunirmal Debnath said the group consisted of former members associated with the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), belonging to the Reang community. They allegedly blocked the highway at Sadhupara, disrupting the movement of vehicles.
According to Debnath, the Deputy Collector/Magistrate (DCM) first attempted to resolve the situation by asking the group to remove the obstruction and disperse. An announcement was also made to persuade them to leave the spot. However, the group allegedly did not respond to the administration’s appeal.
“Given the need to ensure public safety, especially during the ongoing festive season, we took action to remove them from the site,” Debnath stated.
Following the intervention, the individuals were detained and taken to the detention centre at AD Nagar in Agartala, he added.
Debnath further alleged that the group resorted to force while police personnel were carrying out the detention. Two constables, Prosenjit Das and Kajol Debbarma, were injured during the confrontation and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The incident comes as police and administrative authorities remain on alert to maintain law and order during the festive season. Ensuring smooth traffic movement on national highways and preventing disruptions to public life remain key concerns for the authorities.
