Agartala, 29th March 2025:   Former MLA Jhumu Sarkar, a prominent figure from the Left era, passed away untimely on Friday night at around 10 PM. Known for his dedication to public service, Sarkar’s demise has left the political and social circles in mourning.

Sarkar, who had recently attended the Maha Kumbh to witness the historic royal bath, returned home with a sense of spiritual fulfillment. However, his health took a tragic turn when he contracted a rare and complex disease shortly after his return. Following medical advice, his treatment began locally but showed no significant improvement. He was later shifted to a private hospital outside the state, where doctors diagnosed him with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare condition caused by the Campylobacter jejuni bacteria.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Sarkar’s condition deteriorated. “The disease gradually destroyed the cells in his lower body,” shared a family member. The family spared no effort or expense in seeking treatment, eventually bringing him back to GB Hospital in Agartala. Tragically, all efforts to save him proved futile.

Sarkar’s body was taken to his residence in Lankamura, where current MLA of Barajala Assembly constituency, Sudip Sarkar, paid his respects at around 1 AM. “He was a dedicated leader who served his people with unwavering commitment,” said Sadeep Sarkar, laying flowers in tribute.

On Saturday afternoon, a delegation led by CPIM state secretary and leader of the opposition Jitendra Chaudhury along with MLA Sudip Sarkar, visited the late leader’s residence to offer condolences. “Jhumu Sarkar’s contributions to the Barajala constituency will always be remembered,” said Chaudhury.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha also expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “My heartfelt sympathies to the family and relatives of Jhumu Sarkar during this difficult time.”

Sarkar, who won the Barjala Assembly seat in 2016 with overwhelming public support, later transitioned to a teaching career after passing the job examination in 2018. His untimely demise is a cruel twist of fate for a man who dedicated his life to public service.

The last rites were performed at the Battala crematorium on Saturday. Due to the nature of his illness, the body was not brought to the party office. The loss of Jhumu Sarkar marks the end of an era for his supporters and the community he served.
