Agartala, 1st September 2025; Alleging a surge in violence under the current BJP-led alliance government, former Rajya Sabha MP and senior CPI(M) leader Jharna Das Baidya accused the administration of failing to protect women and vulnerable groups in Tripura.
Speaking at the 15th divisional conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) in Belonia today, Baidya claimed that incidents of murder, terrorism, abduction and rape have become rampant, with victims ranging from young children to the elderly.
“In Hira’s regime, women’s dignity is being trampled. There is no safety, no respect,” Baidya said, referring to the ruling dispensation’s branding of Tripura as a ‘Hira’ (diamond) state. She criticized Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha for publicly acknowledging women’s insecurity during a recent deputation, yet continuing to portray Tripura as prosperous and progressive in external forums.
The conference was organized by AIDWA’s Belonia divisional committee began at the CPI(M) Belonia office with flag hoisting and floral tributes at the martyr’s memorial. Despite prior permission, a planned rally was reportedly cancelled by police citing law and order concerns, an action condemned by AIDWA leaders.
Over 200 women participated in the event, which also saw the announcement of a new committee and future action plans focused on women’s rights and democratic equality. Baidya was accompanied by Jamuna Pal (Belonia divisional secretary), Shiuli Lodh (South District secretary), Bijoy Tilak (CPI(M) Belonia sub-divisional secretary), and Basudev Majumdar (CPI(M) district secretary).
