Agartala, 19th November 2025:   A political controversy erupted today after Agartala’s Shibnagar Modern Club allegedly reported the theft of a portrait of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Local MLA Gopal Chandra Roy made the allegation while speaking at a food distribution event in Ashram Chaumuhani, organized to mark Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

Roy questioned how such a theft could occur despite the presence of CCTV cameras at the club. Urging Chief Minister and Home Minister Dr. Manik Saha to allow the police to function impartially, he remarked, “Simply smiling and saying that law and order is fine is not enough.”

Criticizing the state’s security situation, Roy referred to a recent incident in Belonia where an officer-in-charge was assaulted. He argued that such incidents would not happen if law and order were truly under control.

The MLA also raised national-level concerns, asking what happened to the BJP government’s 2014 promise of creating two crore jobs annually. “If the government had fulfilled its promises, there would not be such distress in the hills,” he said, referring to unrest in the region.

Roy accused the government of failing to provide 200 days of work under employment schemes and not increasing wages as promised. He also highlighted Indira Gandhi’s significant role in India’s Food Security Act and her contributions during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.

Using Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary as a platform, Roy placed the government in the dock for unfulfilled promises and alleged administrative failures.
