Former TSMC President Dr Bijoy Debbarma slams MLA Kalyani Saha Roy’s public humiliation of doctor

Date:

Agartala, 9th June 2026:  The former president of the Tripura State Medical Council (TSMC), Dr Bijoy Debbarma, has strongly condemned the public behavior of Tripura Legislative Assembly member Kalyani Saha Roy, who allegedly disparaged Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Dr Raja Jamatia during duty hours on June 6, 2026.

Dr Debbarma criticized the incident, stating: “An MLA cannot take the law into her own hands. The Constitution does not grant such authority. No one has the right to publicly humiliate a respected professional and make a viral video of it. As a public representative, you cannot interfere with a citizen’s democratic right to dignity and reputation.”

He further emphasized that Tripura’s healthcare system requires institutional solutions rather than publicity-driven stunts on Facebook Live, warning that doctors have increasingly become soft targets for politicians across party lines. Medical officers, he noted, often face difficult situations ranging from emergency response challenges to instances of physical assault.

Referring to the MLA’s conduct, Dr Debbarma remarked: “If you had any complaints, there are officials such as the Director, the CMO, and even the Minister. After all, your own party is in government. There is no legal justification for behaving in this manner. I strongly condemn and denounce this authoritarian conduct.”

Calling for accountability, he urged the MLA to reflect on her actions and issue an apology to the concerned medical officer. He also appealed to medical organizations to take note of the incident, stressing that public humiliation of doctors should not be tolerated.

Dr Debbarma concluded by likening the treatment of the medical officer to being disparaged like a “cattle thief,” underscoring the gravity of the insult.
