Agartala, 28th March 2025: The foundation stone for the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) Tripura campus was ceremoniously laid by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 08, 2022. This marked a significant step towards enhancing forensic science education and research in the region. However, the journey to establish the campus has faced several hurdles, particularly concerning land allocation.
Initially, 49 acres of land in the Srinagar area under the Sadar subdivision were allocated for the campus. Unfortunately, due to technical reasons, the construction process on this land was later canceled. As an alternative, the government allocated 1.96 acres of land adjacent to the Buddha Temple and an additional 15.16 acres in the R.K. Nagar area. Addressing concerns about compensation, officials clarified that since the land in Srinagar was not acquired, there was no question of compensating for any losses.
In the interim, the university has been operating from a temporary campus at the old B.Ed. College in the Radhanagar area. The building was renovated to accommodate the institution, and classes commenced during the 2021-22 academic year. Currently, the university offers four undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, catering to the growing demand for forensic science education.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who also serves as the Minister in charge of the Higher Education Department, provided updates on the campus’s progress during the sixth day of the assembly’s budget session. Responding to a query from Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Dr. Saha assured that construction work on the alternative land, including boundary walls and other necessary infrastructure, would begin soon.
“The government is committed to ensuring the timely establishment of the NFSU campus in Tripura. Despite the initial setbacks, we are making steady progress,” Dr. Saha stated during the session.
The establishment of the NFSU campus is expected to strengthen forensic science education and contribute significantly to the region’s academic and professional landscape.
