The incident occurred around 11:30 am in the Sidangchhara area of Kumarghat when a 12-wheeler truck collided head-on with a battery-operated auto-rickshaw.
The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the e-auto completely mangled. The auto-rickshaw driver, Bhaskar Goswami (45), a resident of North Pabiacherra, died on the spot. Three passengers—Kanchana Chakma (55), Harishankar Debnath (52), and Garimili Chakma, all from different localities of the Machhli area—also lost their lives. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Unakoti District Hospital.
Two other passengers, Jatrakathi Chakma (42) of Machhli and Mayarani Debnath (55) of Pecharthal, were seriously injured. They were initially taken to Kumarghat Sub-Divisional Hospital before being referred to Unakoti District Hospital due to their critical condition. Medical Officer Dr. Prasenjit Das said one of the injured was later shifted to Agartala’s G.B. Hospital for advanced treatment, while the other continues to receive care at the district hospital.
Following the accident, the truck driver reportedly fled the scene, sparking anger among local residents. Police rushed to the spot, initiated an investigation, and launched a search operation to trace the absconding driver.
Meanwhile, MLA and former Minister Bhagaban Das expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a Facebook post. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured, describing the accident as “heartbreaking and tragic.”
