Agartala, 9th October 2026 : Four Left-wing student and youth organisations staged a protest march in the capital on Friday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar.
The march was organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Tripura Youth Federation (TYF), Tripura Students’ Union (TSU) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI). The procession passed through various roads in Agartala before culminating at Orient Chowmuhani, where an effigy of the Chief Election Commissioner was burnt.
DYFI state secretary Nabarun Deb, along with leaders, members and supporters of the four organisations, participated in the protest.
Speaking to the media, Deb alleged that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was acting in the interests of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and was paving the way for the creation of two categories of citizens in the country.
He claimed that nearly 13 crore voters had been deprived of their voting rights in several states, effectively reducing them to second-class citizens. Deb further alleged that the BJP was using the Chief Election Commissioner to take measures aimed at retaining its hold on power.
Claiming that alleged irregularities by Gyanesh Kumar had come to light, Deb said student and youth organisations would take to the streets in Delhi on Saturday. He also alleged that railway and metro services in the national capital had been shut down in anticipation of the protest.
