FSSAI suspends Tripura packaged drinking water unit for major food safety violations

Date:

Agartala, 4th August 2026 :  The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licence of a packaged drinking water manufacturing unit in Tripura’s Gomati district after an inspection uncovered serious violations of food safety and hygiene regulations.

The action was initiated against *M/s Matri Drinking Water* following a consumer complaint alleging the presence of foreign particles in its packaged drinking water. Acting on the complaint, FSSAI officials conducted a detailed inspection of the facility and detected several critical deficiencies that could compromise public health.

During the inspection, officials found that finished packaged drinking water was being stored in open areas outside the production unit, placed directly on the floor and alongside non-food items, creating a high risk of contamination.

The inspection team also reported poor sanitary conditions within the processing and bottling sections of the plant. Damaged walls, peeling paint, cobwebs, and inadequate pest control measures reflected a lack of proper hygiene and maintenance.

Further, the unit was found using rusted chemical dosing containers and a corroded reverse osmosis (RO) water storage tank. According to FSSAI, the use of such equipment can adversely affect water quality and pose potential health hazards to consumers.

Officials also observed significant shortcomings in the plant’s food safety management practices. Mandatory records related to sanitation, equipment maintenance, pest control, internal audits, and training of food handlers were either incomplete or not maintained as required.

Taking note of these serious violations, FSSAI ordered the immediate suspension of the manufacturing licence of M/s Matri Drinking Water. The authority reiterated that strict enforcement measures would continue against food business operators failing to comply with prescribed food safety standards, reaffirming its commitment to protecting consumer health and ensuring the availability of safe food products.
