Agartala, September 16, 2023: Tripura, a state in the northeastern part of India, is gearing up for the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival that honours the elephant-headed god of wisdom and success. The festival, which originated in Maharashtra and is popular in Mumbai, has become one of the biggest events in Tripura in recent years. It has also replaced the traditional Biswakarma Puja, a festival that worships the god of architecture and craftsmanship, in many places.

The city of Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is witnessing a frenzy of preparations for the festival, which will start on September 19 and last for three or four days. Various junctions, including areas adjacent to Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan and motor stands, are adorned with colourful lights and decorated marquees. The idols of Ganesh, also known as Siddhidata or the giver of success, are being sculpted by skilled artisans and will be installed in the marquees or temporary shrines. The devotees will offer prayers and sweets to the deity and seek his blessings for their family and business.

The festival is not only a religious occasion but also a cultural and commercial one. It reflects the influence of Mumbai’s culture on Tripura, as well as the growth of trade and commerce in Agartala, which is becoming a smart city. The festival also serves as a prelude to the grand Durga Puja, which is celebrated in October. Many people believe that Ganesh Chaturthi will soon surpass Durga Puja in terms of popularity and scale.

The festival also attracts visitors from different parts of the state and beyond. They come to enjoy the festive atmosphere and witness the immersion of the idols in water bodies on the last day of the festival. The potters are also busy making clay pots for the immersion ceremony. The festival has brought joy and excitement to the people of Tripura, who are ready to welcome Ganapati Bappa with chants and songs.
