Agartala, 6th November 2025: In a significant milestone for Tripura’s healthcare system, the Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital successfully conducted its fifth kidney transplant on November 4, 2025. The procedure was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, whose continued support has helped establish kidney transplantation as a viable treatment option in the state.
The recipient, a 32-year-old man from Kalyanpur in Khowai district, received a kidney donated by a well-wisher. Both donor and recipient are currently under close observation by a team of specialist doctors.
This marks the fifth consecutive successful transplant at the hospital since the state’s inaugural procedure on July 8, 2024. The operation was carried out under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of transplant experts from both GBP Hospital and Shija Hospitals.
From GBP Hospital, the surgical team included urologists Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Mukut Debnath, and Dr. Jiban Debnath, along with nephrologists Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Udayan Saha, and Dr. Reshmi Das. Shija Hospitals contributed urologists Dr. Soumyarendra Paonam and Dr. Maharabam Mahale, and nephrologist Dr. Galiver Potsangbam.
Anesthesia support was provided by Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Chirashree Choudhury, and Dr. Tapan Debbarma from GBP Hospital, and Dr. Anand Nagom and Dr. Apollo Khundkpham from Shija Hospitals. Senior Nursing Officer-in-Charge Tapati Chakraborty oversaw the entire transplant process.
Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital, emphasized that all transplants are conducted in accordance with strict protocols and require authorization from the relevant committee. He added that comprehensive testing is mandatory to ensure compatibility between donor and recipient.
