Agartala, 14th July 2025: Gomati District Hospital has achieved a significant medical feat, successfully performing a highly complex hernia repair on an 85-year-old patient with severe comorbidities. This marks the first time Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block anesthesia under ultrasonography has been used for such a procedure at a district hospital in Tripura, setting a new precedent for advanced care in the region.
The patient, Bijoy Chandra Das, suffered from debilitating pain due to dual hernias, compounded by kidney dysfunction, uncontrolled hypertension, and a dangerously low heart rate of 44 beats per minute. Traditional surgical methods were too risky.
A dedicated multidisciplinary team, including Senior Surgeon Dr. Biswajit Paul, Anaesthesiologist Dr. Moutoshi Choudhary, and Radiologist Dr. Priyanka Debbarma, chose the innovative TAP block. This technique precisely targets nerves under ultrasound guidance, ensuring pain control while maintaining cardiac stability.
Dr. Paul highlighted the “extraordinary challenge” presented by the patient’s fragile condition. Dr. Choudhary explained the TAP block’s crucial role in avoiding cardiac arrest risk. Post-surgery, Mr. Das is stable and experiencing significant pain relief. Medical Superintendent Dr. Kajal Kumar Das, Medical Superintendent of Gomati District commended the team, calling it a “tremendous success” that underscores the hospital’s commitment to cutting-edge patient care.
