Agartala, 2nd December 2024:  The Tripura government has announced plans to procure 21,315 metric tonnes of paddy from farmers during the upcoming Rabi season, offering a revised minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 23 per kilogram. This increase from last year’s Rs 21.83 per kilogram aims to enhance farmers’ earnings and promote agricultural growth.

Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury shared the details at a press conference held at the Secretariat. He underlined the government’s dedication to improving farmers’ economic well-being by ensuring fair prices for their crops.

“The paddy procurement program will begin on December 19, 2024, with an inaugural event at the Jirania Madhab Bari Truck Terminus in West District. Procurement centers will also be operational in 49 locations across various districts to ensure a convenient and efficient process for farmers,” Chowdhury stated.

He highlighted the collaborative efforts of the state and central governments to double farmers’ incomes and enhance their economic resilience. “Since 2018, the state has procured over 2.07 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, benefiting 1.08 lakh farmers. The initiative has involved an expenditure of Rs 405.88 crore,” he added.

The bi-annual paddy procurement program, conducted during the Kharif and Rabi seasons, was introduced by the current administration after assuming office in 2018. It has since been a cornerstone of the government’s agricultural policy.

Earlier today, Agriculture Minister Ratanlal Nath chaired a virtual meeting with Sub-Divisional Administrators, Block Development Officers, and officials from the Agriculture and Food Departments to finalize preparations for the program’s smooth implementation.

Food Department Director Sumit Lodh and Agriculture Department Director Sharadindu Das also attended the press conference, reiterating the government’s focus on farmer welfare and efficient execution of the procurement scheme.

The increased MSP and streamlined procurement process reaffirm the Tripura government’s commitment to empowering farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural development in the state.
