Health and hygiene concerns: Sadar SDM administration raids Abhishek Restaurant in Agartala city

Agartala, 23^rd July 2024:  In a surprise operation conducted by the Sadar sub-divisional administration, several restaurants and hotels in Agartala were raided on Tuesday morning. The focus of the raid was to assess the cleanliness and hygiene standards of food preparation establishments in the city.

Among the establishments targeted was the popular Abhishek restaurant. The administrative team found alarming conditions in the kitchen, where food was being prepared in an unclean and unhygienic manner. Outdated equipment and improper handling of ingredients raised serious concerns. Food samples were promptly collected for further examination.

As a result of the inspection, the kitchen of Abhishek Restaurant was ordered to be closed immediately. The collected food samples will undergo laboratory testing, and appropriate action will be taken by the administration of the Sadar subdivision based on the results.

The raid extended beyond Abhishek Restaurant. At other restaurants located in Kaman Chowmuhani, the administrative team found evidence of poor food handling practices. For instance, Dum Biryani, cooked meat, and chowmein from the previous two days were stored in unsatisfactory conditions within refrigerator deep boxes. Shockingly, these subpar food items were still being heated and served to customers.

In addition to hygiene concerns, the prices of food in many Agartala restaurants were found to be unusually high. This pricing structure puts quality meals beyond the reach of common people. Furthermore, some establishments were overcharging customers for electricity and other services, which is unacceptable.

While the recent raid highlights the need for immediate action, there is a growing demand for regular inspections to prevent the recurrence of such unhealthy practices. The administration must ensure that food establishments maintain proper hygiene standards and adhere to fair pricing practices.

The fate of other restaurants, including Hotel Park Line, remains to be seen as authorities continue their investigations.
