Agartala, 12th May 2025: Heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms between May 11 and 12 wreaked havoc across Tripura, damaging 1,835 houses and displacing hundreds. According to a report from the State Emergency Operation Centre, 991 people have taken shelter in relief camps across the state.
West Tripura District has been the worst affected, particularly the Mohanpur Sub-division, where 51 houses were fully destroyed, 614 severely damaged, and 1,145 partially damaged.
The district administration has set up four relief camps including Akhilacherra English Medium HS School: 455 people from 153 families, Sankhala SB School: 175 people from 68 families, Chandicherra SB School: 150 people from 49 families , Gayamani English Medium JB School: 211 people from 65 families.
Elsewhere in the state, four houses were partially damaged in Jirania (West Tripura), while Sepahijala District reported two houses each severely and partially damaged. In North Tripura’s Dharmanagar Sub-division, a major road was blocked by a fallen tree and later cleared by Aapda Mitra and Civil Defence Volunteers. Five electric poles were damaged in Gomati District.
The Meteorological Centre in Agartala has issued an Orange Warning, forecasting continued heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several districts for the next four days.
