Agartala, 26th March 2026:    A housewife was saved from a life-threatening attack by the timely intervention of local residents, highlighting both community vigilance and alleged police negligence.

According to reports, Saiful Mia Sarkar attempted to kill his wife, Payal Akhter, by hanging her with a towel upon returning home on Wednesday night. Payal’s screams alerted neighbors, who rushed to her aid and prevented a tragic outcome.

Payal later alleged that her husband, under the influence of drugs, had been physically abusing her for years. He had reportedly sold all her wedding jewelry and, at times, assaulted their two- to three-year-old twin children. The continuous abuse has left Payal living in fear and insecurity.

“The villagers’ timely intervention saved my life. If they had not come after hearing my screams, I would not have survived,” Payal told the media on Thursday. She also called for justice and urged government authorities to take strict action against her husband.

Residents of Rajib Colony expressed distress over the incident and criticized the Vishalgarh Women’s Police Station for not responding to repeated calls. “People call the police when in danger. If the protectors themselves do not answer, where is the safety of the common people?” villagers said.

The case has drawn the attention of local authorities, and residents have demanded stringent punishment for the accused. Meanwhile, Payal’s plea for justice continues to resonate in the community, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protective measures for women facing domestic violence.
