Agartala, 23rd March 2025:   A shocking case of blackmail and fraud linked to an extramarital affair has come to light following the tragic death of a housewife in Rajnagar, Samarganj under Sabroom subdivision. The victim has been identified as Rina Nama, succumbed to her injuries on October 30, 2024, after battling for 12 days in GB Hospital. She had attempted suicide by consuming poison on October 18.

Her family alleges that a businessman named Santanu Biswas of the same area had entrapped her in a deceptive affair before blackmailing her with intimate photos and videos. “What started as a normal acquaintance turned into a nightmare. He extorted nearly Rs 10 lakh from her over the years, threatening to leak private content,” a family member revealed.

The situation worsened when Santanu allegedly set his eyes on Rina’s eldest daughter, a Madhyamik examinee at the time. “She could not bear the fear of her daughter being harmed. The pressure was unbearable,” said a close relative, pointing to the immense emotional distress that led to her suicide.

Initially, Rina’s husband, TSR jawan Sanjib Nama refrained from legal action to protect their daughter’s studies. However, after the examinations, he filed a formal complaint at the Srinagar outpost under Manubazar police station. Investigations soon uncovered Santanu’s crimes. As police closed in, the accused attempted to flee the state but was arrested at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport on March 20. Following legal proceedings, the Belonia court on March 22 has remanded him in jail custody until March 25.

“This case is not just about one woman’s suffering. It reflects how vulnerable families become when their loved ones are away serving the nation,” remarked a local resident. The incident has sparked outrage, with many demanding stricter measures against such exploitative crimes.

Authorities have urged vigilance to prevent similar tragedies. “Rina’s case should be a wake-up call. Society must come together to protect victims from such predators,” a senior police official stated. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by manipulation and betrayal.
