Agartala, 8th  February 2026 :   The Howrah Market in Botatola, Agartala, which had long been associated with anti-social activities and illicit trade, was demolished by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Sunday. The decision comes as part of the ongoing construction of a riverside amusement park along the Haora River, with authorities emphasizing that the presence of the market could create problems for future visitors.

Business owners were instructed to remove their equipment by February 7, and some complied. Early Sunday morning, AMC officials began demolition work, using bulldozers to clear the area. The plan is to redevelop the market into a modern facility in the near future, AMC Mayor Deepak Majumdar said during an inspection of the site.

Mayor Majumdar stated that only businesses holding valid trade licenses will be allowed to operate in the new market. For those already aligned with AMC guidelines, the municipal authority is considering rehabilitation measures. He emphasized that the corporation’s actions prioritize the welfare of the general public and that the city will not tolerate any obstruction to these efforts.

The mayor also reflected on the previous administration, noting that during the construction of flyovers in Agartala, thousands of traders were evicted without rehabilitation. He pointed out that those displaced then had approached other political parties and even courts to demand their rights, delaying any assistance. In contrast, AMC now seeks cooperation from vendors to maintain cleanliness and order in the city.

Mayor Majumdar further assured that the future Haora Market will have strict regulations. No liquor shops, gambling activities, or illegal operations will be permitted, and enforcement will be closely monitored. The demolition and inspection were carried out alongside the municipal commissioner and the AMC task force.
