Agartala, 7th July 2024:  Tripura police have arrested a human trafficker allegedly involved in the case of 23 Rohingya people apprehended earlier this week in Dharmanagar’s ISBT and Churaibari Police Station’s naka point area. The suspect has been identified as Sukut Ali, a resident of Gobindapur village under Irani Police Station in Unakoti district.

Following the arrest the North Tripura District’s Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty confirmed the arrest and informed that Ali will be presented before the court and authorities expect to uncover the entire network involved in the trafficking operation after a thorough interrogation.

The Rohingya individuals were apprehended earlier but details surrounding their presence in Tripura remain unclear. While Ali stands accused of trafficking a second detainee claims the Rohingya were residing at a relative’s house. This arrest comes amidst ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking in Tripura. The state, bordering Bangladesh, has witnessed several instances of human smuggling with Rohingya refugees being particularly vulnerable.
