Agartala, 29th January 2026: In a humanitarian gesture aimed at safeguarding those who risk their lives to deliver news, the Sabroom sub-divisional police administration distributed helmets to local journalists as part of Road Safety Month.
A majority of journalists in the state work without remuneration, often exposing themselves to danger while reporting on police activities, administrative affairs, government development, corruption, social issues, and matters of national security. To ensure their safety, the police administration organized a special program at the Sabroom Sub-Divisional Police Officer’s office on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The event was attended by District Superintendent of Police (IPS) Maria Krishna C, District Police Officer (IPS) Vishal Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nityananda Sarkar, along with officers from various police stations in Sabroom. Members of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh from Sabroom and Manu Bazar units, as well as representatives from several local clubs, were also present.
Speaking at the program, SP Maria Krishna C highlighted that nearly five lakh road accidents claimed 1.5 lakh lives across India last year. However, in South Tripura, road accidents and fatalities decreased by about 20 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, a reduction that could be further improved with greater awareness.
IPS Vishal Kumar added, “We use covers to protect expensive mobile phones, yet we neglect to wear helmets to protect our invaluable heads. This is truly unfortunate.”
The initiative has been widely appreciated within the journalist community, recognizing it as a thoughtful step toward their safety.
