Agartala, 4th February 2025: A shocking case of mob violence unfolded late Monday night in Bishramganj under Sepahijala district where a husband and wife were brutally beaten by villagers.
The victims, Bapan Mia and Bilkis Begum, were attacked inside their home, prompting Bilkis to flee to the Bishramganj police station seeking help and safety.
Bilkis Begum, who hails from a family residing near the Bishramganj Superintendent of Police office, had married Bapan Mia in December last year. Their love marriage, solemnized in court, led Bilkis to move into her husband’s house in the area adjacent to Nonjala School. However, their relationship faced hostility from certain villagers.
Bapan Mia had been previously married and has a son and daughter from his earlier marriage. His first wife, along with their son, had been living at her parental home for nearly a year. Despite this, Bapan developed a romantic relationship with Bilkis, which led to their legal marriage and cohabitation.
On Monday night, several men and women from the village stormed their house, assaulting the couple with sticks and inflicting severe injuries. Bapan Mia suffered heavy bleeding, while Bilkis also endured attacks, allegedly by members of the local women. In a desperate attempt to save herself and her husband, Bilkis managed to escape and rushed to Bishramganj police station, recounting the horrifying ordeal to the authorities. Meanwhile, the assault on Bapan continued in their home.
Upon learning of the attack, Bilkis Begum’s brother, Robin Hossain, also arrived at the police station, pleading for police intervention and protection for his sister and brother-in-law. According to family sources, Bapan’s first wife had no objections to him living with Bilkis, and both women had agreed to cohabit peacefully. Despite this, the villagers took matters into their own hands, subjecting the couple to brutal violence.
Speaking to the media, the distraught couple expressed their deep frustration over the role of the local police, particularly officers from the Sera Police Station, who they claim did not act swiftly to prevent the attack. They have called for immediate justice and strict action against those responsible for the assault.
At present, Bilkis and Bapan are taking refuge at her parental home near the Bishramganj SP office. The incident has raised serious concerns about mob justice and the failure of law enforcement to protect victims in such situations. Authorities have yet to confirm whether any arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
The demand for justice is growing louder, with calls for stringent action against the perpetrators and proper protection for the couple to ensure their safety.
