Agartala, December 23: The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), Tripura State Centre, in association with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited, Tripura Asset and Tripura Institute of Technology organized a quiz completion and a seminar program on the theme ‘Energy Conservation for a Sustainable Future’ on Friday, as a part of the national observance of Energy Conservation Week.
This program was held in the Seminar Hall of IEI, Tripura State Centre, Gurkhabasti, Agartala. National energy conservation day in India is celebrated to aware people about the importance of energy as well as saving or conserving more energy by using less energy. Thus the objective is to make people aware of the necessity of energy efficiency and conservation basically for the cause of ‘Energy Efficient India’ as well as for a ‘Cleaner Planet’.
It may be pertinent to mention that Energy Conservation Day is a reminder that we can no longer go easy with our sources of energy and we must conserve them. Coal, oil and natural gas – the most utilized sources – take millions of years to form. But their depletion rate is 100,000 times faster than they are being formed.
It is said that our energy resources may last only for another 40 years or so. India has approximately 1% of the world’s energy resources but it has 16% of the world population. Non-renewable energy sources constitute 80% of fuel use. About 75% of our crude oil needs are met from imports which would cost about Rs. 1,50,000 crores a year. Also, energy production and its use account for a large proportion of air pollution and more than 83% of greenhouse gas emissions. If we do not act on conserving energy today, we cannot save ourselves from a dark future.
Er. Krishna Kumar, Asset Manager, ONGC Ltd., Tripura Asset graced the occasion as Chief Guest of Honour. In his speech, he mentioned the scope of a robust environmental future through energy conservation and also highlighted the initiatives of ONGC Tripura Asset on energy conservation. The Special Speakers of the program were Dr. P. Padamagirisan, Asst. Professor of Electrical Engineering, NIT Agartala and Dr. Shantanu Acharya, Asso. Professor of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, ICFAI University, Tripura. The program was presided over by Dr. Subhadeep Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura State Centre. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Deb Barma, Honorary Secretary of the Center, delivered the welcome address and vote of thanks was offered by Dr. Kaberi Majumder, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tripura Institute of Technology on this occasion.

The engineering students participating in quiz completion on the theme were awarded by the Chief Guest of the program. The programme was attended by distinguished corporate members of the IEI, senior officials of ONGC Tripura Asset, young engineers and engineering students.
