Agartala, 17th November 2026:   Eight illegal sand mining sites are reportedly operating under the leadership of Chiranjeet Debnath, raising serious concerns among local residents and officials.

Sources informed that Debnath submitted project files to the department seeking a sand mining license. However, despite lacking proper authorization, large-scale extraction continues near bridges, causing damage to government property.

The Srinagar–Anandanagar bridge, used daily by hundreds of commuters, has become particularly vulnerable. Locals say that during the monsoon season, crossing the bridge becomes extremely difficult due to erosion and structural weakening. Residents fear that if sand lifting is not stopped immediately, the bridge may face complete collapse.

Community members allege that Debnath is running eight illegal ghats under a single project name. Although forest department officials are aware of the situation, no action has been taken so far. Villagers claim that some local leaders and a section of forest staff are benefiting financially from the illegal operations, allowing the activity to continue unchecked.

Farmers have also raised alarm, stating that paddy fields and Public Works Department (PWD) roads are at risk of destruction. In response, residents have appealed directly to Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, demanding urgent closure of the illegal sand mining sites to protect public infrastructure and agricultural land.
