IMD and TU signs MoU  for indigenous lightning detection system development

Agartala, 25th December 2024:  In a significant step towards enhancing India’s capabilities in weather monitoring and research, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Department of Physics, Tripura University.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of distinguished officials, including Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), and Dr. M. Mohapatra, Director General of the IMD.  The MoU was signed by Ms. R. Madan, Scientist G at IMD, and Dr. A. Guha, Professor at the Department of Physics, Tripura University.  The collaboration aims to expand the indigenous development of India’s Lightning Detection Network (ILDN), a critical infrastructure for real-time lightning detection and forecasting. Additionally, it seeks to foster a robust ecosystem for collaborative research, integrating the expertise of academia, research institutes, and operational agencies across the country. 

Dr. Ravichandran lauded the initiative as a vital stride in utilizing advanced technology for improving weather prediction and mitigating natural disasters.
