Agartala, 20th May 2025:  The Meteorological Centre in Agartala has issued an orange alert for North Tripura and Unakoti districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall between May 21 and May 25. A yellow alert has been issued for the rest of Tripura during the same period.

According to the latest bulletin, Unakoti and Sepahijala have already received heavy rainfall, while moderate showers were recorded across West Tripura, Sepahijala, Khowai, and Unakoti in the past 24 hours. The remaining districts saw light rainfall. The temperature across the state has remained within the normal range, with no significant change in maximum and minimum readings.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light to moderate rain with thundershowers across the state in the coming days. The orange alert for North Tripura and Unakoti signals a heightened risk of intense weather activity, while the yellow alert indicates a less severe, yet cautionary, weather situation for the other districts.

The IMD attributes the ongoing weather system to two key atmospheric phenomena: an east-west trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan to north Bangladesh, passing through north Rajasthan, south Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, at approximately 1.5 km above mean sea level.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation located over central Assam, north Bangladesh, and surrounding regions, also around 1.5 km above mean sea level. “These systems are likely to trigger heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated locations across several districts in Tripura,” the IMD stated.
