Agartala, 19th June 2026: As Bengalis prepare to celebrate the traditional family festival of Jamai Shashthi tomorrow, markets across Agartala and other parts of Tripura have begun to reflect the festive spirit. Vendors have stocked their stalls with essential puja items, including karamcha, flowers, durba grass, bel leaves, mangoes, litchis, seasonal fruits, and other ritual offerings, anticipating increased demand ahead of the occasion.
Despite the vibrant atmosphere and festive preparations, traders say business has not yet met expectations compared to previous years. According to local vendors, persistent cloudy weather and intermittent rainfall over the past few days have significantly reduced footfall in markets, affecting overall sales.
“Traditionally, Jamai Shashthi brings a surge of customers and boosts business for fruit sellers and puja item vendors. However, the uncertain weather has kept many shoppers away,” said a trader in Agartala market.
Adding to the subdued market response is the presence of Mal Maas (Adhik Maas) in the Bengali calendar this year. As per traditional customs, the first Jamai Shashthi of newly married sons-in-law is generally not observed during Mal Maas, resulting in fewer special arrangements and reduced festive spending by families. Traders believe this has also contributed to lower-than-expected sales.
On a positive note, prices of most essential puja items have remained stable. Vendors report that commodities such as karamcha, flowers, durba grass, bel leaves, and other ritual necessities are available at affordable rates, providing relief to consumers amid the festive season.
While concerns remain over sluggish business, traders are hopeful that favorable weather and last-minute shopping will draw larger crowds to the markets and improve sales before the festival begins.
As Jamai Shashthi approaches, Agartala’s markets continue to buzz with anticipation, blending tradition, devotion, and hope for a stronger finish to the festive shopping season.
