Jiten applauds CM’s Support for Bereaved Family, Seeks Action in Two More Child Death Cases

Agartala, 25th May 2025:  Leader of Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, on Sunday commended Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury today for their compassionate response toward a grieving family who recently lost two children in a tragic drowning incident. Chaudhury, however, urged the state government to extend similar support in two other cases of child deaths reported from different parts of the state.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Chaudhury—who is also the state secretary of the CPI(M)—praised the gesture of visiting the bereaved family of Prasenjit Debnath (11) and Priyanka Debnath (7), who drowned on May 17 in a water-filled pit allegedly left unattended by a building promoter in Chanmari, on the outskirts of Agartala.

“I must appreciate that you took time from your busy schedule to visit the house of the victims and, along with Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, extended both condolences and financial assistance to the grieving parents. While no amount of support can undo their irreparable loss, your compassionate gesture will certainly help them find strength to cope with the tragedy,” Chaudhury wrote.

He further appealed for an independent inquiry into the incident by an expert team to ensure accountability.

Citing two more recent child death cases, the LoP called on the Chief Minister to ensure similar attention and support for the affected families. On June 28, 2024, two young girls drowned in Mohanpur Sub-division of West Tripura District. “The families, deeply shattered by the loss, have reportedly not received any government assistance to date. This negligence is deeply painful and raises serious humanitarian concerns,” Chaudhury stated.

In another incident on May 20, 2025, a 9-year-old girl from Nalsing Sardar Para in South Tripura’s Sabroom subdivision went missing while playing near her home. Her body was found the following day in a nearby forest, under circumstances that have raised alarm in the community.

“The parents—Rahim Tripura and Sabita Tripura—along with local residents, are demanding a fair and thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice. The brutal nature of the incident warrants urgent legal action,” the letter read.

Chaudhury urged the Chief Minister to ensure prompt financial, legal, and emotional support to the families affected by all three tragedies.“Though delayed in the case of the Mohanpur tragedy, I hope the government will act swiftly and sensitively to bring relief to these grieving families, and ensure justice and accountability in each case,” the letter concluded.
