Agartala, 15th July 2025:  CPI(M) Politburo member and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government over the recent hike in electricity and water tariffs, accusing it of burdening citizens with excessive taxes.

Addressing the media today, Chowdhury said the move was part of a broader strategy by the government to “cut into people’s pockets” while failing to deliver basic services.

“The glory of Tripura’s electricity sector — once admired across the northeastern region and beyond — has been erased under the BJP regime,” said Chowdhury. “Seven years into this model state campaign, the public has been fed crores-worth of advertisements, but during even mild rain, electricity disappears for a week.”

Chowdhury further criticized Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath for holding a lengthy briefing on electricity and smart meters at the BJP party office rather than through official departmental channels. “Instead of addressing the poor state of electricity supply, the minister attempted to mask the issue while pushing for privatization via the smart meter project,” he alleged.

The CPI(M) leader also condemned the simultaneous increase in water tariffs and pledged that the party would join a larger public movement against these policies in the coming days. “People must rise and resist these decisions that punish them financially,” Chowdhury urged.
