Agartala, 1st September 2026 : CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury launched a strong attack on the BJP-led government in Tripura, alleging that democratic rights were being curtailed and people were facing pressure to stay away from opposition programmes.
Addressing a public rally organised in connection with the three-day state conference of the All India Krishak Sabha (AIKS) at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala on Tuesday, Chaudhury claimed that vehicles had been stopped in several areas and that threats were allegedly issued to people warning them against attending the rally.
He thanked farmers, Jhumia cultivators, agricultural labourers, women and other participants for attending despite the alleged pressure. According to Chaudhury, the AIKS state conference was being held after nearly five-and-a-half years because of what he described as an “abnormal situation” affecting democratic organisations.
Chaudhury alleged that democratic institutions and constitutional rights had come under pressure in Tripura. He cited the recent announcement of elections to Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council after a nine-year gap as an example of what he described as the weakening of democratic processes.
Raising concerns over public safety, Chaudhury referred to the unnatural death of the state’s Director General of Police and questioned how ordinary citizens could feel secure if the highest-ranking police officer himself was allegedly unable to ensure his safety. He demanded greater accountability over the incident.
On employment and outsourcing, Chaudhury referred to figures cited by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and claimed that around 26,000 positions had been outsourced in addition to 22,000 regular appointments. “If 48,000 personnel have been added, why are schools, hospitals, health centres and government offices still empty?” he asked.
He further alleged irregularities in outsourcing and accused sections of the ruling establishment of benefiting through commissions. Describing the situation in departments such as PWD, RD and Agriculture as “Mafia Raj” and “Commission Raj,” he also criticised the condition of roads across Tripura.
Chaudhury urged farmers, workers, youth and democratic forces to unite to defend constitutional rights, democratic institutions and people’s livelihoods.
