Agartala, 19th March 2024: In a concerning development, the state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Mr. Jitendra Chaudhury, who also serves as the leader of the opposition, has penned a detailed letter to the Chief Election Commissioner in New Delhi. The letter outlines a grievous incident involving an attack on an elderly woman in the Mohanpur assembly constituency, allegedly by workers affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), amidst a conspicuous lack of intervention by the local police.
The incident, which took place a mere day after the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, involved a violent assault on Ms. Milan Bala Deb. Ms. Deb, an octogenarian, is the mother of Mr. Raman Deb, a prominent CPIM leader. The attack occurred at Gangagatipur, within the 2-Mohanpur assembly constituency, at approximately 7 PM. According to reports, BJP workers, identified as Ranjan Debnath, Ranjit Debnath, Parimal Debnath, and Dhiman Debnath, pursued Mr. Raman Deb, a member of the CPIM Mohanpur SDC Secretariat, with what were described as lethal weapons. In an attempt to protect her son, Ms. Deb was struck on the head, resulting in severe injuries and subsequent hospitalization.
Mr. Raman Deb promptly filed an FIR at the Sidhai Police Station following the incident. However, Mr. Chaudhury’s letter highlights a troubling lack of action from the police, suggesting a possible bias due to the alleged assailants’ affiliation with the ruling BJP. The letter emphasizes the gravity of the situation, noting the attack’s occurrence during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and despite the deployment of ample security forces throughout the state.
In his communication with the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Chaudhury has urged for immediate and decisive action. He requests that the police authorities be directed to swiftly apprehend the accused individuals and ensure their detention for the duration of the election process, thereby upholding the sanctity of the electoral proceedings and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
