Agartala, 22nd June 2025:Residents of South Kalipur in Kailashahar staged a road blockade on the Lakshmicherra Bridge today protesting the alleged negligence and mismanagement in ongoing embankment renovation work. The demonstration took place in Ward No. 14 under the Kailashahar Municipal Council.
Locals claimed that despite repeated complaints, no meaningful action has been taken to improve the condition of the embankment. “For days, only loose soil has been dumped. It has formed a high mound, making the road unusable. We are forced to carry daily items on our shoulders. Even patients can’t be taken to the hospital,” said one of the protesters.
Due to the blockade, traffic came to a standstill, with long queues forming on both ends of the bridge. Passenger vehicles, goods trucks and even ambulances were left stranded, causing severe inconvenience to commuters and emergency services.
Police from Kailashahar police station arrived at the scene and attempted to mediate. Officer-in-Charge (OC) urged the protesters to withdraw, stating that blocking a public road without prior notice was not lawful and caused undue public suffering. During the negotiations, a heated exchange broke out when an allegedly inebriated protester argued with the OC. He was subsequently taken to the police station.
Following police intervention, the blockade was lifted, and traffic movement resumed. However, the residents reiterated their demand for immediate and effective renovation of the embankment road.
“The administration must act now. We’ve waited long enough,” said another protester. Whether the authorities respond with urgency to the locals’ grievances remains uncertain.
